Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
This morning our teaching staff and school leadership picketed in support of our respective unions’ whole day strike action.
Education is in a state of crisis here in the North of Ireland. The following cuts have recently been implemented to the sector:
- Reduction of £7.5 million in capital funding for schools,
- The discontinuation of the book scheme for P1.
- Ending of Free School Meals holiday payments.
- Cessation of funding for the P7 Cycling Proficiency Scheme.
- The discontinuation of counselling funding for schools (Happy Healthy Minds).
- The end of Engage funding.
- Critical Extended Schools money streams finished.
- No additional funding to mitigate against the high cost of heating and lighting for our school. Additional spend has to come out of the school budget. This then ends up curbing spending on areas for resources to support our children’s education.
- Massive reductions to the 2023/24 school budget.
Teacher’s pay here in the North is significantly less than any other region on these islands. In real terms, over the past ten years, it has essentially been a 30% reduction in relation to inflation. Yet more and more is expected of our teachers on a daily basis with no additional time or payment given to reflect this.
Today the teachers and school leadership of the school have effectively withdrawn their labour and thus do not get paid. The support of our parents and school community is very much welcome at this time!
P.S. Thank you to Conor McKibbin and the staff of Brennan’s, Dundrum, for their solidarity this morning with complimentary refreshments. It was much appreciated.
This coming Friday afternoon (28th April) we will be holding a Colour Run in aid of school funds and Daisy Lodge (Cancer Fund for Children).
The boys and girls from P1 to P7 will take part in a 1 mile fun run, walk or jog in a rainbow of colour in what promises to be great fun at the GAA pitch! It will be a 1pm start.
We would ask that all children bring a white t-shirt to school on the day so that they can wear it during the Colour Run. Funky sunglasses and goggles are welcome too! PE gear is to be worn to school on this day.
A suggested donation of £5 can be brought into school on Friday by each participating child. All parent/carers are welcome to attend as well.
Thank you.
Aoibhe P4
Aoibhe is a talented, hardworking and very pleasant pupil who is extremely popular with everyone. I am immensely proud of her for all of her hard work and dedication towards her learning, particularly with her progress in reading and literacy. She is very helpful around the classroom, always shows kindness and never forgets to use her manners. She always ensures her work is neat and presentable and she has produced some fantastic pieces of artwork throughout the year as part of her World Around Us topics. Aoibhe always comes to school with a smile on her face and is a great friend to everyone. Well done Aoibhe and keep up the great work!
Miss Byrne’s P1 class headed to the Mourne Seafood Bar in Dundrum today as part of their new World Around Us topic, ‘Under the Sea.’
The children got to explore a variety of sea creatures with all their senses, even taste! This was a fantastic opportunity to learn about local sea creatures and how the food is caught locally, prepared and cooked.
Back in the classroom, P1 have created their very own Mourne Seafood Bar and have hugely enjoyed role playing as customers, servers and chefs. There have even been some tough food critics leaving reviews.
A huge thank you to all at Mourne Seafood Bar for a brilliant day!
This morning Tula, along with her handler Debbie Flanagan, attended school to oversee the first of our Reading Therapy sessions.
Tula is certified as an emotional support dog. Reading Therapy in this capacity allows for children to read in a non-judgemental and attentive environment. Research has proven that there are great gains to be had in reading standards via this approach.
We look forward to continuing with this initiative in Term 3 and allowing for as many children as possible to avail of this resource.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
