To celebrate Earth Day on 22nd April we carried out an investigation into the greenhouse effect. We put water and ice into two large jars and measured the temperature of these. We then covered one jar with cling film to mimic the greenhouse gases in our atmosphere and took the temperature of each jar every 30 minutes. We found that the jar which was covered with cling film was warmer and retained heat more than the jar which was open.
It was fantastic to have everyone back after the break! We made the most of the good weather this week and ensured we took most of our lessons outdoors. We focused on identifying fractions and finding equivalent fractions. During our Literacy lesson we found a giant bolt in the outdoor classroom. We had to investigate whether this could have anything to do with out new book, ‘The Iron Man.’ We also started our new World Around Us topic, Renewable Energy, and will focus on explanation texts during our writing lessons.
Primary 5/6 have been making the most of the good weather and have been taking their learning outdoors. This week we have been focusing on place value, the features of a newspaper report and we started our new topic, the Romans!
First Week Back to School!
Primary 5/6 have had a great start to the new school year! They have mastered their new routines and have settled into their new classroom. They came together as a class to create wonderful self-portraits for our display and even managed to find time to build some sorting hats and practise their multiplication and divisions skills. An ice lolly treat at the end of the week was well earned!
Dear Parent/ Guardian,
I hope everyone is keeping safe during this unexpected school closure. It is great to see so many children working hard at home and using their creative skills to keep learning fun and active. I just want to give a massive 'Thank You' to everyone for becoming the front runner of your child's education. I am delighted to see so many photos arriving in with children attempting and completing various tasks. Keep up the good work everyone!
Below I have attached the weekly timetable to follow, which outlines the recommended daily activities to complete. I would encourage all parents and carers to familiarise yourself with the timetable before looking at the activities. There is no pressure on children to complete all the activities as every household is different but I have provided daily activities if there are families who are able to complete a task each day.
All documents and links can be found under each subject heading with documents labelled according to the week and topic. There are PowerPoints explaining new areas to help guide you through the learning.
Please carefully read through further guidance for World Around Us and Writing activities. This will help give you and your child further explanation of what is required to complete the task with relevant links to complete STEM activities.
All literacy tasks for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday can be found using the Junior English Textbooks provided in the initial home learning packs. There are also activities and learn screens uploaded to Education City to help with the content in the textbook as best possible.
On the timetable, if it states 'worksheet' this can be found under 'Numeracy' and the relevant week and topic. The textbook pages for NHM 3 have also been uploaded for those that did not receive a textbook. Those working on NHM 4 please refer to your textbook for numeracy work unless stated otherwise. There is also a section for word problems. Please select the group best suited for your child.
To help reflect the learning in the textbook there are further learn screens that will guide your child though the topic as well. There are also activities uploaded to support the learning in the textbook. You will notice in particular a strong emphasis on number work and the relationship between multiplication and division.
The religion focus is Pentecost. Children are to go through the story of Pentecost through the PowerPoint and complete a fact file about the important information from the story. There is also a stained glass window that children can print and colour in also. Those who would like a further challenge there is STEM challenges to make a dove out of a paper plate or attempting origami. The 'Grow in Love' website is still free to use as well. When in the ebook part, select 'Primary 5' and it is page 64 'Theme 8: The Church is a Community of Believers' and Lesson 1. The login is: trial@growinlove.ie and the password is: growinlove
If your child needs any further reading books you can email me and I can upload these on Bug Club remotely.
I would also encourage children to continue to be active as possible with various resources online and on social media to keep fit.
Keep an eye on the school's Facebook page for further activities ranging from Eco schools to various STEM challenges.
I would like to wish all the children and their families continued good health throughout this difficult time.
Yours sincerely,
Mr. Brennan

The children enjoyed a day out to the Armagh Planeterium to further their knowledge on our WAU topic Space. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and experienced the Dome where they were taken on a tour of the Solar System and learnt about some of the geographical features on each of the planets. The children were then brought into their workshop to build rockets. The children had to design their rocket and then got to launch their rockets outside using water as their fuel. Children enjoyed watching each other’s rockets blast-off. The trip was shared with the P.2/3 class also.
In the STEAM task pupils worked in teams of 3 to make a bridge from paper which was structurally stable enough to hold a 1kg weight. Children were shown how to create ‘roll tubes’ using mandrels and a sheet of paper. The children enjoyed this activity and working as a team to create a bridge.
The children were using their engineering skills to design and create a landmark from around the world. The children then had the opportunity to recreate a map of the world and help Santa deliver presents from the North Pole to the different countries by coding the Sphero ball around the world while visiting the different landmarks. The children have really enjoyed this topic.
Pupils in P5-7 participated in a Sentinus Robotics Roadshow where they worked in teams of two to complete a number of different tasks. Their main task was to navigate (through programming) their Boebot Car around the Sentinus ‘track’ successfully and direct the car through roundabouts, bends and traffic lights.
Each team had to think logically, problem solve and code/ programme their way to the finish. It was a truly fantastic learning experience enjoyed by all.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
