P1 had a fantastic day at Exploris Aquarium in Portaferry as part of their learning about life under the sea. The boys and girls especially enjoyed taking the ferry and seeing all the different sea creatures. They were fascinated by the colourful fish, mesmerised by the jellyfish and even got to touch some starfish in the rockpool area.

Mr McCartan’s class visited the Ulster Transport Museum in Cultra today. This was great timing as the class have just started to learn all about ‘Transport’ as their new World Around Us topic.
The children explored all modes of transport, new and old, learning about trains, trams, the Titanic and planes. During the tour the class were given the opportunity to go around the different parts of the museum; the DeLorean from the famous ‘Back to the Future’ movies being a huge hit all round. The class were also very interested to see a penny farthing in real life after learning about it earlier in the week.
A great and informative day was had by all. A super way to arouse curiosity at the start of a new topic!

P7 had a fantastic time visiting their Knockevin friends today.
To begin they were treated to some amazing food in the Roots Cafe. All the boys and girls thought that the offering and service was top class and hope to visit again soon!
After this, they enjoyed some time in the sun before experiencing a music lesson with Rory. They learnt a new song and had the opportunity to play the keyboard and the drums.
Everyone has been enjoying these visits and are looking forward to the next!

The P4/P5 class had an exciting Outdoor Classroom Day, tying into their new WAU topic, ‘Hidden Habitats.’ The children explored two distinct environments: the school flower bed and the beach. Armed with iPads, they captured the diverse animal and plant life that they encountered.
In the school garden, they discovered earwigs, woodlice, spiders and worms. At the beach, they found springtails under rocks and periwinkle crabs. The students then uploaded their findings to their Just2Easy accounts, where they researched and added detailed information to their pictures.
This hands-on experience not only enhanced their understanding of local ecosystems but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the natural world. 🌿🌊📸

This week in World Around Us the class were wrapping up their topic of ‘My Local Area.’ They used this opportunity to celebrate Outdoor Classroom Day within that. They also linked it in with their Literacy to write up messages about Dundrum. The idea was to create messages for people who had never been to Dundrum before. The children thought it would be a good idea to make this a ‘Message in a Bottle’ activity and collect all the responses and secure them in a bottle.
As we are situated so close to the beach they went down for a walk and found a place to let the bottle free in the water. Who knows where the messages could end up!?

Niall P1
Niall is a fantastic all rounder who consistently brings enthusiasm, curiosity and a positive attitude to school each day. He has a genuine love of learning and particularly enjoys outdoor lessons, where he truly thrives — whether in the forest or at the beach.
Niall is always polite, respectful and a pleasure to be around, making him a valued member of the school community. As an active and dedicated member of our Eco Council, he shows great care for the environment.
Niall has also embraced our new ICT initiative, Just2Easy, with vigour, picking up new skills quickly and confidently. In addition, he has shown a real interest in learning Irish, which he thoroughly enjoys.
Niall is a credit to our school and a very deserving recipient of the Principal’s Award for P1.
Today the school undertook our Scoil Spreagtha accreditation and we were praised widely for the wonderful promotion of the Irish language in Sacred Heart P.S.
One such exponent of our native tongue is P6 pupil Isla who is a fervent and passionate Gaeligeoir. Isla’s use of the language permeates throughout the school and her contextual use of Irish in everyday interactions shows a real grá for articulation.

P5/P6 celebrated Outdoor Classroom Day with a hands-on Numeracy activity using Venn Diagrams to sort natural objects found around Dundrum Castle.
After a quick refresher, pupils worked in groups using hula hoops to create large-scale diagrams. They began with simple categories like colour and texture, then challenged themselves to come up with their own sorting rules, everything from ‘bendy vs not bendy’ to ‘can be crushed!’
This was an enjoyable way to combine Maths, Science and Outdoor Learning!
