• People Who Help Us

  As part of their new World Around Us topic, People Who Help Us, P1 learned all about individuals who assist them in school. 

  First, they went to the kitchen and got a behind-the-scenes tour. The children asked Betty and Nuala lots of questions about being a cook, caretaker, and classroom assistant. 

  Carmel, our school secretary, then came down and told the children all about her role and job in the school. Finally, the children made lovely thank-you cards.

  

• Children in Need

  As part of our annual drive for Children in Need, the Student Council have once again come up with a fundraising venture. Guess the name of the bear and guess how many sweets there are in the jar are the two initiatives. 50p per guess or £1 for two guesses. This will be set up before and after school so children can get the opportunity to partake.

• Child Protection/Safeguarding Notice Board

  The school have created a new Child Protection/Safeguarding notice board. The information provided gives our children visual reminders of who they can talk to in school as well as guidelines on keeping safe in and out of school.

  The board is interactive in that it has a thematic element every half term. In Term 1.1 pupils provided work that was related to Pantosaurus and this was then showcased on the notice board serving to embed the message further among the school population.

  Our Designated Teacher for CP/Safeguarding within school is Mr Doyle. The Deputy Designated Teacher is Mr Fitzsimons. Mr Doyle leads this area within Sacred Heart P.S. and along with Mr Fitzsimons they form the CP/Safeguarding Team. It is important too that parents are aware of these roles and who they can approach with related matters.

  

• Fire Service Visit

  The P5 class welcomed two representatives from the Newcastle unit of the Fire Service to school yesterday. The officers gave the boys and girls a talk on fire safety around the home and provided tips on the usage of smoke detectors. Everyone got to see some of the equipment used by the firemen and an opportunity to try on a full protective suit!

  

• Pantry Foodbank

  After the success of our endeavours in 2022 and 2023, Sacred Heart P.S. will be once again running our annual Pantry Foodbank Appeal for Christmas 2024.

  Donations can be left to the school from Monday 11th November to Friday 22nd November inclusive. There will be a box located at the main school entrance from Monday that donated items can be put into all through the week. We do not want families going to any huge expense over this initiative. We are just grateful that you can donate what you can for this great cause. Only one item from the list is needed from each pupil in each class. If people want to bring extra in that is ok.

  Cartons of juice, small or large, squash, cordial, fizzy tins or bottles, water, hot chocolate, tea bags (small packet), (small) jar of coffee, etc.

  Cooking sauces such as curry, gravy, sweet and sour jars or packets, pasta sauces such as bolognese and lasagne, red or brown sauce, mayonnaise, salad cream, jams and spreads.

  Biscuits such as Rich Tea, short bread, etc, crackers, bread sticks, cereals, crisps, popcorn, and sweets.

  Tinned soups, tinned beans, spaghetti, tinned tomatoes, tinned vegetables, such as peas or carrots, etc, tinned meat, such as ham or corn beef, tinned meals such as pies, tinned fish or tinned fruit.

  Toothpaste, mouthwash, soaps, shampoos or conditioners, shower gels, body sprays and deodorants for both men and women, toilet rolls and shaving foam etc.

  

• Principal’s Award

  Ruadhán P6

  This pupil has shown incredible growth and dedication to his work. His commitment to improving the quality of his classwork is truly impressive, evident in the thoughtful presentation and attention to detail he brings to every task.

  In each lesson, Ruadhán's enthusiasm shines brightly. He is always ready to participate, raising his hand not only to answer questions but also to ask thoughtful ones that help deepen his understanding of the subject. His inquisitive nature and active involvement are an inspiration to his classmates.

  Ruadhán is also known for his kindness and respect towards all staff members and pupils, embodying the values of our school community through his polite and positive attitude. His dedication to sporting endeavours and After School Club activities also marks out his achievement in these areas.

• Pupil of the Week

  Our first week back after Halloween half-term saw everyone assimilate brilliantly back into school life. The lead up to Christmas is always an exciting time in Sacred Heart P.S. and as such today, we awarded those that embodied that spirt with Pupil of the Week certificates.

  Well done to Leah from Miss Byrne’s class, Dylan and Amelia from Mr McCartan’s class, Shea and Harry from Mr Doyle’s class, Isla from Miss Mack’s class and Méabh from Miss Crozier’s class!

  

• New P1 Experience Morning

  On Wednesday 11th December the school will host a 'P1 Experience Morning' from 11am to 12 noon for all those prospective P1 boys and girls along with their parents who plan to start in Sacred Heart P.S. in September 2025.

  It will be an opportunity for everyone to meet with the class teacher Miss Byrne and her team whilst getting to partake in a range of themed activities, indoor and outdoor, that will provide a taste of what Sacred Heart P.S. has to offer.

• Numeracy Twilight

  Throughout the year the teaching staff of the school undertake Twilight sessions that focus on a host of different aspects of whole school development. 

  Yesterday evening, our Numeracy co-ordinator Mr Doyle took the lead as the staff came together to put the spotlight on the seven mental maths strategies namely counting on/counting back, re-ordering, partitioning, using equivalence, using factors, inverse operations and rounding/adjusting.

  Each teacher was given the task of coming up with a fun and interactive game associated with a particular strategy. The end products produced some wonderful learning opportunities and everyone is enthused to bring these back and implement them into the classroom.

  On that note, there will be a Numeracy parental workshop held at 3pm on Wednesday 4th December that will have a mental maths strategies theme embedded within it. More details on this to follow!
