The rain failed to dampen spirits as we held our annual Sports Day at Páirc Seán Ó Caoilte on Friday. The huge crowd in attendance were treated to four hours of events.
The boys and girls from Young at Heart along with the P1 to P7 classes had a great day out with the effort on show second to none.
Thank you goes to all the staff of the school for their support of the event, in particular Mr McCartan and Mr Doyle for their organising and co-ordination of the day.
This morning Danny McGrath from Nexus visited our school to present us with a supply of U-fill Power Stick Refills. As we are a ‘Green Flag’ Eco School, and have recently retained our status, Nexus have awarded us these complimentary items.
The U-fill product is the world’s first refillable glue stick. Moving forward our Eco Council have decided that we as a school will change to this product and in turn we will be tackling a long standing environmental issue.
Pictured are the Eco Council along with Eco Schools’ co-ordinator Miss Crozier and Danny McGrath from Nexus.
After a good night’s sleep (for some!), we got up bright and early for a hearty breakfast. The boys and girls were then split into two groups. One headed to the arena for archery whilst the other went to the climbing wall, incidentally the highest one in Ireland. After an hour at each activity there was a swap over before we finished with some great team games led by instructor Patsy. A lovely lunch was had at the lodge before we departed for home just after 2pm.
A huge thank you goes to Miss Crozier and classroom assistant Annette Kelly for their presence on the trip. The boys and girls thoroughly appreciated your time and care. Thanks too goes to the wonderful staff at East Coast Adventure and those within Rostrevor Lodge for their superb hospitality.
It truly was two days to remember for the P6/P7 class!
After getting our lunch on arrival we geared up in wetsuits as we ventured to the shores of Carlingford Lough. There we kicked off with some group paddle boarding followed by a thrill a minute speedfest on the banana boat! A bout of pier jumping followed before we returned to the lodge for dinner.
The day concluded with a nightwalk in Kilbroney Forest punctuated with an impromptu performance of ‘Star of the County Down’ by one of our leaders, Dermot.
Films and copious amount of sweets and crisps concluded the evening as everyone retired to the dorms at 11pm after a superb day of entertainment.
There was a great turnout this afternoon for our Sentinus ‘Building and Construction’ workshop. Staff, parents, pupils and even some past pupils all joined in the fun, making towers out of K’NEX and launching pneumatic rockets.
Thanks to everyone for their participation and to Gerard Hughes of Sentinus for facilitating the workshop.
As part of our new school PE programme delivered via the CORE Kids portal, our P6/P7 class enjoyed a session of Cardio Drumming this afternoon for their PE lesson.
Cardio Drumming is a cardiovascular based, full-body workout that requires you to move and play drums along to music.
Except it doesn’t actually involve any drums!
Instead, the boys and girls use foam noodles to drum. During the class the CORE instructor guides the drummers through a series of rhythms and movements, including squats, jumps and various other mobility exercises, all performed whilst drumming along to music.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
