In their World Around Us topic, P1 have been learning about the important role of firefighters. Today, they discovered how to safely light a fire, practised fire safety and learned how to extinguish a fire. The children also explored key scientific concepts, such as how heat transfers to other objects and they observed the changes that occurred when marshmallows were toasted.
Today marks Mr Lundy’s last day in Sacred Heart P.S. before he sets off on his travels to Australia on Wednesday. A presentation was made to him on behalf of the children and staff of the school at lunchtime.
The whole school community would like to place on record their thanks to Mr Lundy for the contribution that he has made to Sacred Heart P.S. over these last two years. We wish him well in his future endeavours!
Heightened awareness in relation to road safety during the winter time was highlighted today as we engaged with ‘Ditch the Dark Day.’ Children came to school in vivid colours to raise awareness of the ‘Be Bright, Be Seen’ mantra.
One such element of understanding came from Mr Doyle’s class. They investigated and predicted which materials stand out best in the dark, testing their ideas against a dark background using a torch. To apply their learning, the children designed brightly visible clothing to ensure safety in low-light conditions.
A fun and educational day for all!

Today we erected brand new signage at our school and Young at Heart. Our school motto, ‘Striving for Greatness Together,’ is given prominence as we aim to make visible the maxim through which our school community works toward.
Thank you to South Down Signs for working alongside us with the creation as well as designer and past pupil Laurence Smith of Studio Cognito.

The busiest period in the school calendar is upon us and as preparations for the Christmas period ramp up, we are mindful to acknowledge the great application and effort that is ongoing within Sacred Heart P.S. Well done to Annie P1, Eimíle P2, Rosie P3, Hugh P4, Neil P5, Niamh P6 and Eddie P7 for picking up the Pupil of the Week awards!
Aliaith P4
This week’s Principal Award goes to someone who has worked incredibly hard since the start of the year. She has shown fantastic improvement in her spellings, learning more each week, and she has persevered with tricky Mental Maths strategies like 'round and adjust' and 'partitioning.'
She always gives sensible answers during our Grow in Love discussions and shows kindness by playing fairly and including others in her games.
Aliaith truly embodies our school motto, ‘Striving for Greatness Together,' with her excellent work ethic and positive attitude.
Well done!
As part of their World Around Us topic, People Who Help Us, P1 had a special visit today from paramedics Colin and Emma. The class learned all about their important work and what it involves. They had an exciting tour inside the ambulance, where they got to see the many tools paramedics use. Miss Byrne even had her blood pressure checked! To top it off, the children experienced the sounds of the ambulance siren and watched the blue lights in action.
A big thank you goes to Colin and Emma for visiting P1 today!
