Mairéad P2
The Principal’s Award this week goes to P2 student Mairéad. Mairéad has been working exceptionally hard so far this academic year and has really shown the way for all. She exhibits excellent manners every day and always puts her hand up to ask a question and participate.
Mairéad is a great friend to all and is always ready for work. She really enjoys Numeracy especially Mental Maths and has great fun during some of the starter games the class have been playing before they begin classwork. She shows great initiative and will try different ways to solve problems or tricky tasks.
Mairéad takes her time and ensures all her work is neat and tidy. She loves to read and she has recently started the Accelerated Reader programme. Mairéad has shown fantastic progress and endeavour so far in P2. Keep it up!
It was school Christmas dinner day today and what a magnificent feast that was served up to all. Everyone, children and staff alike, were treated to a fabulous meal and to that effect we place on record our thanks to POSH for covering the cost of it all. Gratitude goes the way of our kitchen staff, Betty, Nuala and Ann, for their wonderful work and preparation as well as our classroom assistants and teachers for helping out with service.
Festive spirit filled the air with all the Yuletide favourites blasting over the PA. Our now traditional sing-a-long garnered plenty of high spirited voices as the Christmas season truly arrived in Sacred Heart P.S.
This afternoon Mr Doyle, our Numeracy subject lead, led a fantastic workshop for parents and children.
The 7 mental maths strategies were the core focus of the event. Every strategy was explored via theory with worked examples being done collaboratively with those in attendance. Then everyone got the chance to rotate through the practical zones that all offered fun learning techniques and challenges for each strategy. Bespoke resource booklets were given to every parent and will be great reference tools at home.
Thank you to Mr Doyle for co-ordinating the workshop and for the delivery of it. Gratitude is extended as well to our teaching and non-teaching staff for their involvement in facilitation. To all the parents and children who attended, thanks for your participation and we hope that you all took a lot of learning from it.

P7 travelled to Hillsborough Castle and Gardens today to experience what Christmas would have been like for wealthy Victorians back in a bygone era.
They learnt all about the first Christmas tree, the original Christmas garden, what games were played and what they would eat. They were delighted too when Father Christmas himself turned up to speak to them!
The class had great fun navigating their way around the vast gardens to complete the 12 Days of Christmas trail.

Sacred Heart P.S. made their debut today in the Flahavan’s Primary Schools’ Cross Country League. The event was held at an icy Donard Park, Newcastle. We were delighted to be able to bring along an enthusiastic team of 11 eager runners who acquitted themselves superbly well with some real standout performances.
A big thank you goes to parents Phil Moore and Joanna Hogg for assisting with lifts and their support of the team on the day. It was also great to see a number of other parents there to cheer the boys and girls on!
Our next outing is in January and we look forward to offering more children the opportunity to participate. A 4 week block of training will also start in the New Year.
The response to our now annual Pantry Foodbank appeal for Christmas 2024 was astounding. Thank you so much to everyone in our school community who donated goods over these last few weeks.
This morning, John and Pat from the organisation visited the school to collect the donations. They were extremely thankful for the support that Sacred Heart P.S. had given. Gratitude aswell is relayed to staff member Annette Kelly for co-ordinating the initiative.
