Sacred Heart P.S. Dundrum are proud to announce the inception of the Jarlath Carey Memorial Cup. The new annual GAA tournament will take place at Páirc Seán Ó Caoilte on Tuesday 21st June at 10am. Four schools will compete in this inaugural competition for the Jarlath Carey Memorial Cup and the Dundrum GAC Shield.
Jarlath Carey (RIP) was the former Headmaster of Sacred Heart P.S. Dundrum, having come to the area to lead the school in the Autumn of 1959. His journey in educational leadership continued in the school over the next few decades as he positively moulded the students under his care, academically and in the field of sport.
Jarlath's prowess as a Gaelic footballer was unsurpassed. A legendary midfielder on the Down teams of 1960 and 1961, he picked up two All Ireland SFC titles. Along with this he was the proud holder of five Ulster SFC medals, two NFL's, five Dr Lagan Cups and two Dr McKenna Cups.
We envisage a fine morning of football, played in the right spirit. All those from our school community and beyond are invited to attend.
This afternoon the boys and girls of Sacred Heart P.S. celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. It was a truly uplifting ceremony led by our Parish Priest Father Fleck.
Those receiving the Sacrament had instrumental roles during the service through the readings, prayers of the faithful and the singing of the Psalm. Well done goes to the pupils for their fantastic contribution to the event.
Thank you is reserved for their class teacher Miss Crozier for preparing and guiding the children. We also acknowledge the sterling contributions of our classroom assistants. Gratitude is also directed to our school choir under the instruction of Mr Doyle for the wonderful music with accompaniment from Mr Paul Madden and Mrs Eva McAlea.
Confirmation for our P7 pupils will take place tomorrow in the Sacred Heart Church, Dundrum, at 3pm.
The following arrangements will apply:
- The school choir (P4, P5, P6 and some of those in P7) will be singing at the Confirmation service. They will be in the chapel from 2:45pm to 4pm. Parents/carers can pick the boys and girls up from school at 4pm.
- All those in the school choir are to wear their full school uniform to school tomorrow. P1, P2 and P3 can wear their school PE outfit.
- As a result of these arrangements, there will be no ActiSport After School Club tomorrow from 3pm to 4pm for P4, P5, P6 and P7.

Mr Fitzsimons.
Our P4, P5, P6 and P7 children will be attending Mass in the Sacred Heart Church tomorrow (Wednesday) at 9:30am. Following this, from 10am to 10:30am, the boys and girls will be leading the May Triduum of Prayer. This special event will focus on Mary with personal prayers, readings and involvement from the school choir.
We would like to invite parents/carers and family members to join with us in celebrating Mass and staying on for the May Triduum of Prayer afterwards.
Thank you.
For the first time in Sacred Heart P.S. history we were graded into the county 9-a-side competition for 2022 instead of our usual domain in the 7-a-side format.
This step up in quality took us to Páirc Eoghan Rua in Kilcoo this morning to take on St Malachy’s P.S. Kilcoo in both our Round 1 ties in the boy and girl sections.
Two brilliant games were had with a lot of fine football on show. Well done to both the Sacred Heart P.S. teams for their endeavours. Thank you goes to Mr Declan Lawlor, Principal of St Malachy’s P.S. for his organisation of the morning and to Conor Laverty for officiating at the games and for the advice and guidance that he provided to our players.
Hannah from P3 has worked exceptionally hard recently in both her Literacy and Numeracy, especially her writing skills. Her recent jungle animal project on lemurs was of an incredibly high standard! Everyone has been very impressed by Hannah’s contribution to all classroom activities and keen attitude to answering questions and sharing ideas. She is a kind and caring class member who always shows exemplary manners and respect to her fellow classmates and adults in school.
Very well deserved Hannah!
We welcomed Kevin McCarthy from the Health and Safety Executive to school on Wednesday. Kevin presented on safety around farms. The children were educated around different aspects of farm safety with dangers highlighted and discussed. An interactive forum and follow up booklet activities also took place.
Today the Exploris education team visited school with their outreach touch trailer. Led by experienced aquarists, the boys and girls of P2 and P3 received a fantastic experience that ties into both their World Around Us topics.
Part of the project involves Exploris loaning the school an indoor aquarium tank. Alongside this is life support equipment and educational sessions on how to care for the livestock.
So we now welcome Réalta the Star Fish, Mrs Lobster and Spongebob the Sea Sponge into our school community for the next three weeks!
We will keep everyone updated with how they are getting on from their new base in Miss Byrne’s P2 class.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
