We had great fun celebrating Internet Safety Week in school this week. The children learned that if we work together we can make the Internet a safer medium for all users. Thanks to Mr Brennan and Mr Doyle for delivering a very informative assembly to the school community at the beginning of the week and the children for working so hard on creating videos, posters and poems on the theme Together for a Better Internet.
Reminder to parents!
The Internet can be wonderful for kids- it is a fascinating and effective tool for both teaching and learning, at home and within school. Children can use the Internet to research, communicate, create and play but online access also comes with risks, like inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and online predators. Therefore it is paramount that children are educated on how to use the Internet safely.
It is the responsibility of parents/guardians to be fully aware of their child’s online activity.
If you allow access to social media platforms the following measures may help you monitor your child’s online activity:
1. Agree that you can have access to their phone whenever you want. Check the phone regularly.
2. Ensure you know what apps they are using and that they are age appropriate- know their passwords.
3. Monitor the history of their calls, messages, contacts, pictures and websites.
4. Talk to your child regarding the dangers of social media- children talk to strangers every day through social media.
5. No child needs a phone/iPad in their bedroom at night.
Parents should be aware of what their kids see and hear on the Internet, who they speak to and what they share about themselves. Talk with your kids, use tools to protect them, and keep an eye on their activities.
This week Sacred Heart PS were very proud recipients of the Global Learning Level 2 Award from Linda at Global Learning Schools NI. It is in recognition of the good work the school undertakes in teaching a modern curriculum which generates awareness of global issues such as Fairtrade, caring for the environment, the work of charities locally and beyond, global warming, overconsumption, deforestation etc. A selection of our fantastic Primary One children accepted the award on behalf of the school.
The 100 Days of School Celebration was held yesterday in school. The children recognised being 100 days smarter having learned many important skills, concepts, facts and figures. Maths skills aplenty were on display in our Maths Bee Competition. Well done to the winners in P3-7 classes; P3 Lorcan Smith, P4 Oisin Carr, P5 Martin Cunningham, P6 Liam Byrne and P7 Daniel McAlea! We are very proud of them all! A special mention and well done to Mr Ryan Ross who won the Parent Competition! Thanks also to parents /family members for assisting pupils with 100 Days @ School Projects- your efforts are greatly appreciated & ensured a fantastic day at school. See photograph of our 100 Days at School Project Prize winners who created amazing projects on themes of Eco/school.
SENTINUS STEAM WORKSHOP
In the STEAM task on Tuesday P5-7 pupils worked in teams of 3 to make a bridge from paper which was structurally stable enough to support a 1kg weight (a bag of sugar) for 30 seconds.
Pupils were then shown how to make sheets of paper stronger by using mandrels to roll them into ‘roll tubes’. These roll tubes then had holes punched in each end so that they could be attached together using plastic rivets which are essentially plastic nuts and bolts. Pupils soon realised the importance of having roll tubes of the same size on opposite sides of the bridge. Pupils also arranged their roll tubes into triangular shapes to support their bridge as triangles are the strongest weight bearing shape. All pupils had success with their bridges and worked very well in their teams. It was great to have our friends from St Mary’s Dunsford in attendance!
