Today P4 ventured to the Ballydugan medieval settlement.
On arrival they were greeted by a contingent of Vikings who brought them to meet Jarl in the longhouse. Here they were told about what life was like many years ago for the first Viking settlers in Ireland. Norse mythology was then revealed through a tapestry that was made by the settlers.
Following this, the children were divided into smaller groups where they rotated through a number of practical activities such as archery, bread making, observing the blacksmith carrying out his duties and a weapon demonstration.
Finally, the children were put through a Viking battle drill, before taking on the Vikings in a shield wall battle!
The boys and girls found the trip very enjoyable and engaging and it presented them with a real insight into what life must have been like for these ancient foreign settlers. It has certainly provided a stimulating learning experience for everyone with the class World Around Us topic being all about Vikings.
