P1 headed up to the forest today to look for signs of winter. They had a great time doing a science experiment, collecting all kinds of winter treasures and then putting them in water to see what would happen when it freezes. They also enjoyed exploring the frosty trails, looking at how the plants and trees had changed and talking about how animals get ready for winter.

We tested different materials to see how far they could be blown by the big bad wolf. Children enjoyed making predictions and testing out our theories.

As part of their topic, People Who Help Us, Primary 1 had a special visit from paramedics Colin and Emma. The class learned all about their important work and what it involves. They had an exciting tour inside the ambulance, where they got to see the many tools paramedics use. Miss Byrne even had her blood pressure checked! To top it off, the children experienced the ambulance siren and watched the blue lights in action. A big thank you to Colin and Emma for visiting Primary 1 today!

As part of our new topic, People Who Help Us, P1 learned all about people who help us in school. First, we went to the kitchen and got a behind-the-scenes tour. The children asked Betty and Nuala lots of questions about being a cook, caretaker, and classroom assistant. Carmel then came down and told the children all about her job as the secretary. Finally, the children made lovely thank-you cards.

We started our new topic, People Who Help Us, with a great visit from the fire service. The P1s thought of some great questions to ask the fire fighters and they learned all about basic fire safety, fire alarms and who to call if there is a fire.

Decomposition - children wanted to know where leaves go after they fall. So we collected some leaves and added them to our observation area. Children studied the changes in the leaves and we learned all about compost bins. We had a look at our school compost bin outside.
