As part of our Food Glorious Food topic, our Primary 4 and 5 pupils enjoyed a fantastic trip to the Tayto factory in Tandragee! The children discovered how crisps are made, from storing, washing and slicing the potatoes to cooking and seasoning them. They were amazed to learn that an incredible 100,000 potatoes are used every week! There were plenty of tasty treats to sample too! The children tried a variety of Tayto favourites, including Witches’ Hats, Popcorn, Potato Craft and Fry Bites, as well as a sneak peek at a brand-new flavour, Christmas Stars, which isn’t even on the market yet! The highlight for many was tasting freshly made, still-warm crisps – delicious! We also learned how Tayto works sustainably, with potato skins and other waste being reused on farms as animal feed, helping to reduce waste. A huge thank you to our brilliant tour guides, Josh and Catherine, who made the visit so enjoyable and answered all our questions. The children had a wonderful day filled with learning, laughter and lots of crunching!
As part of Environmental Week, the children created wonderful posters of themselves holding the Earth and reflected on the positive actions they can take to help protect our planet. They shared ideas such as walking to school, turning off taps and lights, caring for animals, reducing litter, and planting more flowers and trees. The children thoroughly enjoyed this activity, expressing their ideas through creative artwork, thoughtful writing and class discussion. They also incorporated recycled materials and litter into their art, helping to highlight the importance of looking after our environment. The finished posters were both imaginative and informative, showcasing the children's enthusiasm for making a difference and caring for the world around them.
As part of Environmental Week, the children reflected on the many things our Earth provides and created colourful posters showcasing what they are grateful for. They shared ideas such as nature, animals, clean air, water, food, family and friends, before presenting their thoughts through artwork, writing and digital creations using Just2Easy. Through class discussion and creative expression, the children developed a greater appreciation of the world around them and the importance of caring for our environment.
As part of our World Around Us topic on food, the children explored the question: “Why is a tomato a fruit, and are there other fruits we find in the vegetable section of the supermarket?” The boys and girls enjoyed sorting different fruits and vegetables into categories before cutting them open to investigate whether they contained seeds. They discovered that tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers are scientifically classed as fruits because they contain seeds, even though we often think of them as vegetables. The lesson was fun and hands-on, with the added bonus of tasting some new fruits and vegetables along the way!
We kicked off our new World Around Us topic, Food, with a fun and exciting blindfolded taste-testing activity! The children used their senses to explore a variety of foods, making predictions and discovering new tastes along the way. It was a fantastic, hands-on way to introduce our new topic and get everyone engaged and curious about what’s to come!
