    Number Bonds to 10

This week the P3 class were looking for related number bonds so for example recognising 3+7 is 10 so 7+3 must be 10. We used part whole models and ten frames to help us throughout this task. Prior learning and understanding were shown throughout this task which made it very enjoyable for all.

    Maths Week 2026

WALT: Count in 2s and 5s

For Maths week the P3 class took to the forest for some outdoor learning. After finding a range of acorns, leaves, sticks and conkers the children in their pairs began to firstly separate their piles into 2s and then into 5s. They had a great time gathering all materials and then began to count in 2s and 5s with great confidence!

More than, Less than and equal to.

Today the children were creating more than, less than and equal to with play doh and their hands. They used the saying 'the crocodile always eats the bigger number' to help them choose the correct sign.

    Problem Solving Fun!

Today for Numeracy the class took part in some fun games. The first game was addition grab two. This game was a 2 player game and each child had numbered cards. The aim of the game was to take two of your partners cards and add them together. Whoever’s number added up to be the biggest was the winner. The second game was a problem solving game called strike it out where the children had to use trial and error and show reasoning for their answers. The children drew their own number lines 1-20 and every time a number was used they had to strike it out. The player with the last possible number sentence was the winner. These games helped enhance mental maths strategies such as counting on.

WALT: Estimate on a number line

Today in P3 we discussed the start, mid and end point of a number line. Then we were introduced to the word estimate. After discovering our start, mid and end point from there we made an estimate as to where our number would be. We watched an example by Mr McCartan then we went outside and had a go ourselves

WALT: Count in tens on a number line

Today we used hula hoops and agility ladders to finish a number line that was partially filled. We had to use our knowledge from the starting point and end point to figure out what the number line was going up in. This was a fun activity that the whole class really enjoyed.

    WALT: Partition Flexibly

Today the boys and girls were shown that we can partition a number in many different ways using a part whole model and tens and ones. We were initially taught to partition by separating the tens and ones but today we were shown that when we split the number into two groups we can have a mixture of tens and ones in each group.

WALT: Code a microbit to create a dice

For Coding week the P3 class were introduced to microbits for the first time and we discussed the basic things about creating a simple code. After trial and error the class were able to successfully create their own code to make their own digital dice. With this we then played a game of snakes and ladders and higher and lower against their partner. This was a great learning experience for the children.

    WALT: Partition numbers to 100

Today in Numeracy we took part in an outdoor lesson and created our own part whole models. This was a good opportunity for us to further our understanding of place value with tens and ones. This practical approach really helped the children understand that with partitioning we can split the number into tens and ones and create a number sentence.

WALT: Count objects to 100 by making tens.

Today in numeracy we had a practical lesson with a focus on place value. There were 5 stations for the children to rotate round. They were as follows; Place Value Numeracy Tuff tray activity, Topmarks PV basketball on the iPad, Ten frame counters to show addition within 20, Tens and Units to create numbers listed showing partitioning of tens and ones and addition and subtraction questions within 20. The children enjoyed the practical element of this lesson and showed a good understanding throughout.

    Place Value

Here are some activities the class has engaged in to help enhance understanding of place value.
