World Around Us

P5/6 have started a new topic - Inventors and Inventions! Today they played a game all about inventing a new car. They rolled a dice three times and this decided features for different categories. We had flying cars with robot arms, eco cars that could change shape and floating cars with invisibility shields. The children then drew their ideas and labelled the features. There was some great creativity on display!

As we are coming to the end of our Egyptian topic, the boys and girls had fun making some Ancient Egyptian style jewellery. After looking at some pictures for inspiration, they were able to identify that the jewellery was often gold in colour, with patterns made from bright colours such as blues, reds and yellows. They also had jewels attached to them. The boys and girls chose to make bracelets or head pieces, and came up with some impressive designs!

As part of our WAU topic on Ancient Egypt, Primary 5 and 6 took part in a hands-on experiment to explore the ancient art of mummification — by mummifying an orange! Pupils began by hollowing out their oranges. They then packed the fruit with a mixture of baking soda and salt, replicating the drying process used by the Egyptians with natron. To add a creative twist, the children wrapped their orange mummies with decorative gems to represent the treasures buried with pharaohs, and placed them in containers that will be transformed into tombs. This engaging activity helped bring history to life and sparked lots of curiosity and discussion. In six weeks, we'll revisit our mummies to see how well they've been preserved — just like the ancient Egyptians intended!
